Calyx has been working with several clients to design and build Accessory Dwelling Units (also known as ADUs.) as additions to their existing homes. ADUs can be constructed on almost every home in Rhode Island as long as they meet the State Law and the Local Zoning setbacks along with having the capacity to add on for the utilities.
Now that the ADU law has passed in RI, we have seen an uptick in requests to build ADUs. We find that the majority of our ADU requests have been for an aging Family Member. We work hard to be thoughtful about how we design and plan to meet each individual’s need of “Aging in Place”. The levels of need can vary as time goes on. Creating an accessible shower with a low threshold and support bars is one of the most common requests. Making all the doors wider to accommodate future use of wheelchairs or walkers is another way of planning ahead to ensure the property meets any future needs. Lowering countertops with undercabinet access makes the kitchen usable for years to come. Minimizing the risk of falling by adding More lighting to be able to see if eyesight is failing. The goal is to keep continuity in accessibility throughout the home.
Other Reasons to Build an ADU
1. A place for your guests to stay
2. Can be used as a home office or studio
3. Can be used to generate rental income along with the attendant tax deductions
4. Housing for a parent or adult child
