Convert your Dream to Plans! 😃

Cameron

Your Project, no matter what the size or cost, represents a significant investment in your home. At Calyx, we understand you want to be sure that you are spending your money wisely. It’s essential to work with Professionals to produce plans, specifications and costs for the project so you understand realistic project costs.

Many Customers come to us already working with someone on their plans without realizing that they should have had a contractor involved as soon as possible. The depth of design affects the cost of the build. Throughout our design process we touch base throughout the process with our Architects and Draftsmen to determine Wants vs. Needs and we work with them to keep the plans in budget.

Different projects have different levels of design. When we initially meet a Client, we ask them to define the services and scope of their needs accurately. We may ask them to share their inspiration pictures, collect magazine articles, floor plans, Pinterest boards and more. This is to get a feel of your style, personality and wishes.

So, what if you are starting from scratch? Where do you begin? First, you should start with a concept of time and what you need your home to be. Will you live in this house for the next ten or more years? Are you planning on aging in place? Will you have (more) kids soon? Do you collect antiques or artwork that you want to display? These may seem benign, but they have a huge influence on your “Dream Plan”.

There are different types of professionals that can help you with your project.

Contractors who specialize in Home Remodeling and can help achieve your vision.

Architects are educated in all the nuances of design and have been certified to work with a State License.

Architectural Planners can help with plans that don’t need aggressive structural work like bathrooms or kitchen remodels.

We recommend interviewing at least three qualified professionals before making a hiring decision. Ask the following questions to determine whether a pro is the right fit for your project.

1. What’s your design philosophy?

It’s important that your Designer’s design style matches your own. Avoid hiring a professional who doesn’t share your aesthetic vision.

2. Do you specialize in residential projects?

Be sure your Designer specializes in residential construction. Commercial professionals may be unaware of the codes and best practices necessary to complete a residential job.

3. What do you expect from me?

Hire a Designer whose work style meshes with your own. Partnering with a Designer who expects too much or too little can cause communication problems and frustrate everyone involved.

4. How do you document decisions?

Large construction jobs will require you to make lots of decisions. Be sure your Designer has a plan to document all details for future reference.

5. What’s included in your fees?

It’s difficult to find the right pro if you’re unsure what is and isn’t included in their fees. Only hire an Designer who provides a clear outline of their charging structure.

Questions to Ask All Pros

There are certain questions that you should ask your Contractor and Designer no matter the type of project:

How Long Have You Been in Business? Experienced pros will keep your project on track and provide an ideal finished product.

How Will You Ensure My Project Stays Within Budget? It’s important that your pro has a strategy for keeping your project from going over budget.

Are You Licensed and Insured? Licensing ensures pros have the skills and knowledge to carry out the job.

Will You Sign a Contract? A contract will define the scope of your job and outline details like completion dates, materials and pricing.

What’s Your Timeline for Completion? Pinpointing your job’s beginning and ending dates will help you plan around your remodel.

How Do You Prefer to Communicate? Clear communication will help you stay up to date with your remodel.

Do You Have References? References will provide insight into your pro’s working habits, customer relations and quality of work.

Do You Have Examples of Past Work? Examples of similar past work will prove your pro has the experience necessary for a successful project.
