The Kitchen is the soul of the house. This is more than a place where we eat. It is the space where we spend time talking about our day – good or bad, hopefully mostly good; celebrating birthdays and other holidays; and experimenting with new recipes that we saw in articles or tasted in a restaurant.
We are about to start new projects working with two new families to update their kitchens. Both families have different needs, so each project is customized for them.
The first couple lives on the East Side of Providence. They have been in the house for years. The house was constructed in the early 1900’s. The kitchen was originally remodeled sometime in the 1970’s or 80’s. The quality of the once trendy cabinets is now outdated and looking tired.
Whenever Calyx does a kitchen project, we always aim to fix problems in layout and address storage or specialized needs. In the case of our first family, they need a first-floor guest bathroom, and the kitchen is currently small and cramped. We are fixing this by removing a redundant set of stairs to open the space for the bathroom, adding an addition to the rear of the house to create a larger kitchen and create and opening to the front foyer to create better flow.
Our second family is a young growing family located in Norfolk, Massachusetts. The couple have been in their house for a few years with their two young children. The home was built in the 1990’s as a plain spec house. The kitchen is surprisingly small and cramped for the size and value of the home. They have a dining room that is adjacent to the kitchen and is currently being underutilized.
One of the most common fixes Calyx can do is to remove the wall between the kitchen and the dining room with a structural beam. This creates a great space for family and friends to connect between the dining area and the kitchen. Instead of a table in the kitchen, we will be creating a large island with seating for five people. This gives a whole new area for food preparation or a buffet island along with a daily eating area for the kids, giving them an opportunity to better utilize the dining room table for formal dining. We are also adding a bank of cabinets along the wall where the kitchen table used to be, adding more storage and countertops. At the end of the day, they will have almost twice as many cabinets along with more countertops.
We are excited to be able to bring their visions to life and will keep you updated on both projects as we start construction.
