This What We Do

We started the construction of an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) this week. As you have read over the last year, we have posted many times about how this is a way to ease the housing shortage in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts (a new law recently passed that now permits ADUs in Massachusetts) and to help with close Family housing issues like a parent, grandparent, adult children or challenged children.

We have built ADUs in basements, converted attached garages, added a second floor or first floor addition or built a detached building. We are currently converting a detached garage to an ADU. The challenge on a detached ADU is how do we get the sewer, water and electricity to the building. The pictures that you see shows an approximately 75’ long trench that was “hand dug” to 4’ deep to meet the building codes. We must cut open a concrete floor in the garage and the basement and drill 3 holes through concrete walls.  Special care must be taken with sleeves and bedding sand to protect the pipes. This is one of the necessary costs that drives a project.

Calyx will keep in touch with you on this project with more pictures and a update.
