When the snow starts to fall and the temperatures drop, many Homeowners might think it’s time to hibernate rather than embark on a remodeling project. Here at Calyx, we have worked right through the winter over the years. We work hard year-round! Interior projects are not weather dependent, except for the occasional snow days. Exterior work can be more challenging, but over the past 40 years, I only recall a handful of days when we could not get a foundation in the ground at all. There was one winter back in 1992 where we dug a foundation at the bottom of a hill, it filled up with 3’ of water and then the temperature dropped to 10 degrees and stayed cold. We could not pour that foundation until April. Then in 2018, we took the roof off a garage in January and framed a new roof in a week. We did our best to plan the work on what was a decent (sunny and high 30’s) week of weather.

Winter can actually be one of the best seasons to tackle home renovations. Here’s why and how to make the most of your winter remodeling adventure.
Contractor Availability: Many contractors experience a lull in business during the winter months. This means you’re more likely to find a skilled professional who can start your project sooner and potentially negotiate better rates.
Less Competition: If you’re considering renovations that require permits or approvals, you’ll likely face less competition during the winter. This can lead to quicker approval times and a smoother process overall.
Boost Your Home’s Value: Winter is a great time to prepare for the spring market. By completing renovations now, your home will be ready to impress potential buyers when the selling season kicks off.
Stay Cozy Indoors: With the cold weather keeping you indoors, it’s a perfect time to focus on creating a warm and inviting space. Whether it’s upgrading your living room, kitchen, or even adding a home office, winter remodeling can enhance your comfort.
Key Winter Remodeling Tips
Plan Ahead: Start your planning process early. Research materials, styles, and get quotes from contractors. This will help you make informed decisions and avoid delays once the work begins.
Choose the Right Projects: Focus on projects that can be completed indoors, such as kitchen and bathroom remodels, basement finishing, or creating a cozy reading nook. This keeps you warm while improving your home.
Consider Energy Efficiency: Winter is a great time to make energy-efficient upgrades. Consider new windows, insulation, or a smart thermostat. These improvements will not only make your home more comfortable now but save you money on heating bills in the long run.
Prepare for Disruption: Remodeling can be messy and disruptive. Create a plan for how you’ll manage without your usual space. Consider setting up a temporary kitchen or living area if needed.
Keep an Eye on the Weather: Winter storms can cause delays. Keep an eye on the forecast and stay in communication with your contractor about any potential weather-related impacts on your timeline.
Invest in Good Ventilation: If you’re doing projects that generate dust or fumes (like painting or sanding), ensure proper ventilation to maintain indoor air quality.
Remodeling during the winter might seem daunting, but with careful planning and the right projects, you can create a beautiful, functional home that’s perfect for cozying up during the cold months. Embrace the season and transform your space into a winter wonderland that you’ll love for years to come!
